I think we should brainstorm a bicycling event similar to the MS 150 that Bert and I ride every year and gear it towards support of PBTFUS. I know that they do motorcycle rides, but I haven't seen any information pertaining to bicycle rides. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Mike Morgan
Hi Everyone!
Ethan is one of the luckiest 3-year olds to have so many folks wishing him good thoughts! We have received emails stating that entire little towns in the Midwest are sending him their love as well as villages in South India and the Philippines!!
Please let us know what else you would like to see on this website and we'll do our best to update the site regularly.
Lastly, a BIG special thanks to "Uncle Kevin" for putting this website together! What a great idea!
Auntie Chaya
Greetings from the Steele family of Springfield, VA. Joe Steele and Albert Gumabay are fraternity brothers from their undergraduate days at George Mason Univ. We have never had the pleasure of meeting Ethan personally, but we were on the receiving end of his birth announcement, as well as his baby sister's, and the recipients of their annual holiday letter which keeps us up-to-date on the family's happenings. Ethan, his sister, and his parents are in our thoughts and prayers during this time of illness.
We look forward to helping out Team-Ethan as much as we can.
God Bless You All, Karen, Joe, Emily, and Megan Steele
I work with Ethan's Grandmother. Jean Litavic (my daughter Ashley age 9) Ruffs Dale, PA 15679
Wow! What a rough rocky road for Ethan and his family but God has his hand over you all. May God give you wisdom and hope as each day unfolds and know that there is alot of people praying for Ethan and all the Children with Brain Tumors. With the personality that Ethan and his family have let the Lord use them as they try to spread the word and help in getting even more support for PBTFUS. As I go through my day I will try to think of ways to help you raise some money for PBTFUS.
Ethan stay focus and remember God Loves you and he chose you to be his son. My prayers go out to you, Ethan and your family.
May God Bless you and your family forever.
I am Heidi and Alan's sister-in-law. My prayers go out to Ethan and his family and friends. He is an absolutely precious child.
We're in the Dallas area. Where I live in Allen, texas we have a fairly new large Harley Store. My brother purchased his bike from them. I will go there and help and/or organize some activity for this September event. In addition, my daughter is in the National Honor Society and they need to do service hours. I will present this to them and hopefully they can do a city wide car wash or some other event.
I will contact the Dallas Morning News and make sure (and I am good at making sure of things)they cover this before, during and after September.
Give Ethan a huge hug. In addition, is he old enough to understand if we send him lots of letters and cards.
I don't know Ethan, but am touched by what his family is facing. I know Kevin & Chris Merrill because we used to be neighbors and remain friends. Children are precious gifts from God; they have a strength and faith that is still pure. This will see Ethan through. Our prayers and faith will support his family as they face what lies ahead. May God Bless. You are all in my thoughts and prayers daily.
In Love and Prayer, Terry Burnap
Ethan's grandmother, Beth Merrill, is my 2nd cousin. Our family is large, spread out, but very supportive and we will be joining our voices via e-mail with wishes and prayers for Ethan's recovery. This site is a wonderful idea. Beverly Veltman, Austin TX
I am very fortunate to work with Ethan's Grandmother, Beth Merrill. Ethan is very blessed to have a wonderful lady in his life. She is an inspiration to me at work as well as to her other co-workers. I almost lost my son in 1992. Through prayers and faith he pulled through. He still has major health problems today but he is still here for me to enjoy his laughter, his voice and his handsome face. Scott was not a small child like Ethan, he was 25 years old, but he was still my baby so I personally feel the pain that Ethan's family is going through. My prayers are with Ethan daily and with the family to give them the strength and courage to get through this horrifying experience. God is watching over Ethan and giving him the courage to keep smiling and touching him with his healing hands. I know that Ethan's test results will be a miracle through all of our prayers and trust. God bless you Ethan ... Love and Prayers, Nancy Pasko
These updates are super. I haven't talked to Kim in a while, but the info was passed on to me by Laura LaVoie. Please let Kim know we are all praying for them and we have placed them on our prayer chain. Marianne Nicklow Lipinski, Frederick, Maryland
Everyone here at the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation is keeping Ethan and all of the family in our hearts and prayers. In fact, we discussed "Ethanisms" in our last staff meeting!Keep us posted and let us know if we can help. Stacy Sorrells, Nat. Hi, My name is Teri Pavlosky and I had the great fortune of going to college with Mike Merrill. What a super guy! My thoughts and prayers are with Ethan and his family. I had a prayer chain started for him as soon as I heard about his surgery. God Bless all of you - I pray that He will give you all the strength and courage you will need in the coming days.
We have been good friends with Kevin and Chris Merrill (and family) for the last 11 years. We have had the opporunity to meet many of their family members (on both sides) and know what special and close knit families they have! Ethan and his family are in our thoughts and prayers daily and we feel that God will get them through this terrible ordeal! Children are our special gifts from God and He will keep Ethan and his family in His loving care. We thank you for this web site so we can be updated on Ethan's progress. Our prayers and love go out to all of you.
Hi, My name is Georgianna Alwine, and I live in Somerset, PA. Briefly, I just want to say that I certainly can relate to what dear Ethan and his Mom and Dad and family have been going through. Back in 1967 my husband and I then lived in Silver Spring, MD and we had a little 2 year old son who was diagnosed with and astrocytoma brain tumor. His name is Kenneth and he went through some extensive testing, then major surgery to remove the tumor, which was larger than a golf ball. He underwent 36 doses of adult radiation at George Washington University Hospital. Ken is now age 37 and doing well. If you care to respond to my note I'm am sending to you today, I would be happy to share any information you care to hear or ask about. I do not have a personal computer at home but if you car to contact me at any time at my home, my address is Georgianna Alwine, 219 N Park Avenue, Somerset, PA 15501. I work with Robert Webb, who is the brother of a sister married into the family. I will be in touch at another time, as I must get busy and work. I am typing this note on my computer at work. God Bless all of you and God will take care of Ethan.
Sincerely,
Georgie
Hi All, I am Chaya's cousin. I got a chance to meet Ethan just once and remember him giving me a warm little hug and a kiss. I figured, Ethan to be a outgoing and strong kid. I am sure he can overcome this storm which will only make him stronger. Nikil
A Hundred Years From Now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a CHILD.
We're wishing the best and keeping you in our thoughts. My sister, Lori Shoaf, is keeping us up to date on the progress.
Warm wishes, Jeff & Catherine Shoaf
I am Auntie Chaya's friend Lori and have had a crush on Ethan since I first met him at Chaya and Randy's engagement party! I think it is a testament to what great people the Gumabays and Merrills are that they built this web site. Not even two weeks into this awful ordeal, they were already trying to figure out how to help others. Ethan is in my thoughts and prayers everyday. I was lucky enough to see him recently and am so amazed by this little guy's resiliency! Love to you all, Lori Shoaf. Arlington VA.
My name is Beth Merrill; I am Ethans maternal grandmother. His grandfather and I live in Berlin Pa. Words cannot begin to express to each of you how dear the guest book is. Your words support us when we stumble, embrace us when were afraid, hug us when we feel alone. We read and reread. If you havent posted, please do, if you have, continue, we feed on your compassionate words. A whirlwind has moved into our lives, and were dazed. We need and so deeply appreciate all the help and kind thoughts. Please dont ask us what you can do, do what your heart tells you. Share this news with your circle of friends & family. Donate to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation through Team Ethan to honor our grandson and hopefully prevent another family or child from this disease. Parents hug your children; Grandparents become involved with your grandchildren, as they are precious gifts. Recognize the uniqueness of every child, the children of our friends, co-workers, and the stranger we pass on the street. Hold Kim, Bert, Ethan and Kyra in your thoughts, hearts and prayers, they are precious beyond words to their father, father-in-law & grandfather and me.
Hi Everyone! I'm a cousin of two of Ethan's best buddies, Tommy Base and Brigi Lieu. I had the chance to spend some time with him as a newborn and toddler during picnics with Kim, Karen, and Heidi and at the kids' birthday parties. It's been a while since I've had the chance to visit with him, but I wanted Ethan to know that my husband and I are praying for him and thinking about him. Please let him know that he also has supporters in the US Army in the 101st in Ft. Campbell, KY as well as the 101st stationed in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Give him a big hug and kiss for us! Take care and we look forward to getting more updates.
Love, Jackie Burrows and SPC Billy Burrows, 101st Airborne Rakkasans, HHC 1/187th Infantry Regiment
A big "hello" from Canada! I'm Karen Bunagan - a cousin of Bert. On behalf of your family from "up north," Ethan, you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Although some of us have not had the privilege of meeting you yet, we are all here for you!
I am not a parent, however, I work with families with young children and understand the family's concerns and fears. But it's wonderful to see (and hear) the great support for Ethan from all corners of the earth. He has obviously made an impact to so many individuals - in person and from afar!
We will continue to follow Ethan's progress through this great web site, and be available for any of Ethan's or his family's needs.
Karen Toronto, ON Canada
Hello Everyone,
I am Ethan's Dad ... Bert Gumabay; I want to thank everyone for the support, positive thoughts, and prayers you've all provided us. I wish I could reach out and hug everyone of you!!! As my family embarks on this journey I am given hope and strength by of so many families.....
From Rick and Kathy Morris who have traveled from the abyss in Rick's recovery from paralysis resulting from a spinal infection. As I see Rick everyday walking and gaining strength, it is a testament of will and perseverance. This truly a success story!
To Jerry Keith whose adult daughter has been diagnosed with leukemia and is currently battling the cancer using some of the brightest minds and facilities in the state of Texas. As fathers, Jerry and I are forever bonded in the continuing struggle to keep our children, no matter the age, safe from harms way.
To my best friend's (Andy Austin) nephew, also named Ethan, who was diagnosed with a pediactric brain tumor at age 4; he has completed his chemotherapy; apparently is in remission, and is doing well. I am stunned by similarity of this situation and proximity to home. Ethan's mom Besty will be getting a call from the Gumabay's to obtain their guidance and learn from their experiences.
To the Cottle family whom we met on the Oncology wing at Fairfax hospital, whose daughter Laura (4 years of age) is in stage IV, but is battling and surviving every single day. Laura had a big sister (6 years old) and a baby sister (6 weeks old) that were all pulling for her. We were moved by the strength of this little girl and her family.
And to all those people who have shared their successes and their sorrows with us..... thank you.
We realize in the weeks ahead, there will be good days and not so good days. We, as a family, will draw upon our community of family and friends the love, the strength, and the hope that will see Ethan through his and our journey together.
Love, Bert, Kim, Ethan, Kyra
Hello, from Austin, Texas! My name is Deneice Cobb and our company has teamed with Veridian on a couple of contracts. Kim has worked on one of those projects with us, for a couple of years.
From the other posts, I can see that Ethan is very lucky to have a great network of support and love. Although I have never met Ethan or any of his family, he has been very heavily in my thoughts and prayers. I hope to be able to give him a big hug, myself, someday soon!
We are Harley riders and have a new HOG chapter in South Austin. We are always looking for excuses to ride and I certainly cannot think of a better cause! I will check into organizing a ride in Austin, for the September event, so count us in!
It seems so unfair that things like this happen to innocent children. I guess only God knows the master plan. I will continue to pray for Ethan and for peace, comfort, and strength for the entire family.
With love, Deneice Cobb
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. I am the massage therapist at Grandma Beth's place of employment. Beth has spoken of all of you many times since I have met her and especially Ethan. Please continue to update this website as I dearly appreciate the progress reports. Again, my family and friends are remembering you and yours in our prayers Linda banks
May the love of Jesus bless you Ethan.

Hello all. My name is Angela Jemison and I have been a close friend of the Merrills and Gumabays for many years. After meeting Kim and Bert at work, I had the pleasure of getting to know both of their families, and I consider them to be some of the best people I have ever met.
I have also known Ethan since he was just a flutter in his mommy's belly. I held him when he was just a few hours old and was amazed at this beautiful creature that my friends had bought into the world.
I have also had the pleasure of watching Ethan grow into an inquisitive and intelligent little boy. I am constantly amazed by his "Ethanism" and marvel at his energy. Anyone who has spent any time with Ethan knows that he is truly as special little boy. His enthusiasm for life is infectious, and he had me singing a rousing version of "B-I-N-G-O" during our last visit!
I looked it up, and the name Ethan means firm or strong in Hebrew. I know that Ethan's strength will carry him through this challenge and I hope he knows how many people are pulling for him.
I just wanted to add my thoughts here so that all of the Gumabays and Merrills know how much I love them and how much I think of them.
Smooches, Miss Angie
I said a prayer for you today. I hope you didn't mind. I asked the Lord to comfort you and put your tears behind.
I prayed for peace and mercy, too, to help you through this day, And for His loving guidance as He leads you on your way.
You need not walk this path alone so I prayed He'd hold your hand, and offer you some guidance in a way you'll understand.
I asked Him for little miracles and to bless you today. Keep searching for the Rainbows - and let Him light your way.
God Bless You Ethan, Kim, Bert, and Kyra

Hello! I used to work with Ethan's mom, Aunt Chaya, and Uncle Randy at VRI. I still remember when Ethan's mom announced to us of his impending arrival.
Ethan's courage and wonderful attitude is an inspiration. Ethan, the Merrills and Gumabays will continue to be in my prayers.
God Bless, stella
This is one of Kim's High School friends, Laura (Deeter) Lavoie. My family and I live in Virginia Beach.
Kim and Bert, I want you to know that you and Ethan are in my thoughts and prayers every day. I pray that you find continued strength from the love that you have for each other and from the wonderful support of family and friends.
God bless, Laura, Rob, Nicholas, Claire and Emmaline Lavoie

Hello to the Gumabays,
My name is Anne Gregg and I work with Diego's mom, Angie Fontanilla. Angie has been keeping us updated on Ethan's progress. You have and will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. You are an amazingly strong family and you will make it through this!
Peace and God Bless You, Anne
Kim: don't know how to get to your directly. My cancer radiation therapist at Fairfax Hospital was Dr Paul Song. He was terrific and worked very closely with me and my oncologist in designing the protocal. He's a real pleasure to work with. Sincerely Paul Cohen (worked with Kim at VRI and a cancer survivor for 4 years now)
My name is Apryl Dunn, and I work with Ethan's grandma, Beth Merrill. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family. I can't even imagine what you are all going through. My husband and I own a motorcycle and hopefully we will be able to participate in the Ride for Kids this year. I think that would be a blast. Again, your family will be in my prayers, and I hope Ethan will pull through with flying colors.
Ken Byrne, I met Kim and Albert (and some of the other Merrill clan) through business transactions, I soon found Albert and I had a common friend and during the transaction become friends with both Kim and Albert. I can't begin to tell you how happy I am that Ethan is OK. Your strength and handling of a difficult situation is extraordinary. Mine and Trish's prayers are with all of you. Ken and Trish Byrne, South Riding VA
To Team Ethan Supporters,
Kevin, Chris, Lauren, Alex, have been good friends for about 10 years now and have always been there for me in both good times and bad. During those years, I have had the opportunity to get to know their families and see first-hand what kind of people they are and I am always impressed with their strength, devotion, and love for one another and their friends. As motorcycle enthusiasts, Kevin (the brother I never had), Randy, and myself have been actively supporting the Ride For Kids effort since 1994 so the fight Team-Ethan is in adds an ironic twist to our efforts to help our nation's children. Ethan is one of these children and is fortunate in that he has such a great family and network of friends to help him through. Also inspiring is the support we have received from Mike and Dianne Traynor and the entire staff at the Ride For Kids and Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation - they are good people with a vision of helping our children through critical brain tumor research. As for Ethan, I believe that on a pretty Spring Day in 2015 his Uncle Randy, Kevin, and OLD friend Al will have him on country road teaching him the proper technique of using a late-apex for cornering his sporting motorcycle... :^)
Karen and I love you and are proud to call you our friends...

To the Gumabays: Up until a few days ago, I was Ethan's oncology nurse case manager. It clearly broke my heart to have to transfer Ethan's case to another case manager !! In addition to following his case from a professional level, TEAM-ETHAN has allowed me to follow it from your very own personal level. I want you to know how very impressed I have been with your website!! In the face of such a catastrophic event, you have been able to provide a wonderful dialog about the 'events' which are occuring. Your little 'medical lessons' add great explanations ~~ and above all, the sense of humor that comes through shows what a truly remarkable 'team' you all are !! ( -- loved the "high blood counts to you" song !!) The love and support of your family and friends clearly shines through , and is such an important part of coping with all that's been handed to your family in the past two months.
This web site will definitely be a huge asset and inspiration to other parents going through similar ordeals -- keep up the good work!! I will be following Ethan's updates regularly. I will keep Ethan and your family in my prayers. And you know you can still call me 'to talk'!!
Candy
I'll say a prayer for Ethan and his wonderful family every day. I'd like to be here for my dear friends Chaya and Randy Merrill in whatever way I can. --Kerry Christiano Arlington, VA
Hello Team Ethan-
My name is Eric Lindenberg. I am a fraternity brother of Burt's and was best man at his wedding. I've known Kim and Burt a long time and, as you all well know, know them to be an incredibly loving and strong couple. My family and I live in the Kansas City area and are only able to see the Gumabay's on an occasional basis. The last time we saw them Kyra was just a little bump on Mom's belly. Ethan is a vibrant little boy who is gifted with all the best traits of his parents. Our thoughts and prayers go with the Gumabay family everyday.
Thanks to all who contribute to Team Ethan.
-Eric, Nora, Pierce, and (arriving in December) Anna Lindenberg
Hi Ethan! It's Angelique, from Dr. Horn's office! Wow! What an amazing web site! I had no idea there'd be so much information, and so much good stuff! I can't wait until the Fun-raiser at Lake Fairfax! It's such a joy to see Ethan, our own personal fireman, in the office! He brings Heather, Margaret, Me, and everyone at the office lots of joy! Praying for you and every child we treat at the office! Keep up the great work with Team Ethan! Love, Angelique
Hi!
This is Grandma Beth's co-worker Steve, and father of Joshua, a brain injured miracle child. My prayers are with you all!

Ethan:
You don't know me, but your Uncle Randy is a good friend of mine. And although he and I don't get to spend nearly as much time together as we'd like, he's still very important to me -- and anything or anyone that is special to him is, in turn, special to me.
My boyfriend was actually diagnosed with brain cancer this past November, and although he doesn't let on, I know that it's certainly taken its toll on him. Now, I can't say that I know what it's like to deal with that, because Jason is 23, and you're SO much younger than he is. Just know how very brave you are -- I don't think that I'd be able to go through what you are -- and not that I envy what you're going through, but I certainly wish that I had your strength and spirit.
Just remember that the Lord never gives us more than we can handle -- and you're proving your strength and fortitude every single day. I hope that every day of this battle gets easier and that your progress continues.
Get well soon!
A great, big bear hug -- *Aaron Maxa
Dear Gumabay/Merrill Family:

Hi Ducky,
My name is Jennifer Fitch or as Ethan would call me "Goosy". I am one of Ethan's nurses at Fairfax Hospital. I would like to help support Ethan and his family in any way that I can. Ethan is an amazing child. His cute little smile brightens up my day. I will see you soon... XXOO =-)
To Ethan and His Family:
Although we've waved in passing and met briefly in exchanging misguided mail, we haven't had the pleasure of getting to know you or your family very well. However, we've gotten to know you a little better by viewing this website and in exchanging heartfelt support w/other close-by neighbors. We wanted to let you know, Ethan, you are in our prayers and we send over our best wishes for your recovery. To your mom and dad, it sounds as if you are strong and positive people. "Keep on Keeping On". We hope to get to know you better in the future.
Pat, Denise, and Alexis Michael (your neighbors @ 12905 Cedar Glen Lane)

Like Chaya, I work for Standard Technology. I don't know Chaya very well, but I work with Kathryn Turner and I am responsible for STeye News, the company's newsletter. I am glad Chaya is including an article about Team Ethan in this month's issue. I have a beautiful, spirited three-year-old (like Ethan) daughter, and Ethan's story has touched me deeply. My thoughts and prayers are with this wonderful little boy and his family.

I just learned about Ethan's diagnosis today and want Kim and family to know that all are remembered in prayer. I will review this site more extensively and participate in any ways that I can. I am a previous colleague of Kim's and live in Arlington. -- Rhonda O'Bannon
I apologize for not responding sooner, but it has taken me awhile to compose my thoughts. Our community of family and friends never ceases to impress. In the life of our child, as well as others in this situation, this support continues to fuel our strength and our courage. As we love and appreciate our family and friends, I wish to extend that same gratitude to each of you who are thinking, praying, and providing positive thoughts to my family.
When we first learned about Ethan, I could not comprehend the magnitude of this event. Beyond the shock and trepidation, we had no idea what to expect. As parents, you shudder to think about the loss of a child, one of which you have hopes and aspirations, one of which you anticipate to succeed you in his / her contribution on this earth. Children (as least in the early stages) have the innate ability to give unconditional love and commitment. In turn, parents have the vital role in providing the intellectual and emotional compass that will guide them and keep them safe. I believe there to be no other connection that compares. For this reason we are battling -- every single hour of every single day of every single week .. because .. our children (our future) deserve no less.
May all of you have the pleasure to love, to guide, to grow, and to continue the success of your families. Please realize you are all now a part of our community, giving us the strength and the hope as we navigate our journey with Ethan.
Thank you for your support, Bert, Kim, Ethan, and Kyra
Hello Kim,Albert and family,
This is truely extraordinary! You guys are such incredible parents for sharing so much with so many,I am moved and inspired.Having done your nails for as long as we have Amy and I both love you and your family. We are active partners in Ethans' full recovery, please ask anything of us that would make a difference to you and yours. Our highest thoughts, Rick,Amy and Kids
I just found the link to this web site via an internal SAIC web page by Kevin Merrill. I read your most recent postings on Ethan's progress and have a pretty good idea what you're going through. My daughter Delaney was diagnosed with AML Leukemia in February or 2001, and I can understand what you must be going through with infections, sstem cell harvesting, etc. The SAIC family was very supportive through my daughters illness. Sadly, my daughter lost her battle with AML early this year, but her spirit lives on in all of us. I think the children who've been through cancer treatment must serve as guardian angels for those who are currently battling this disease. What's amazing, as you describe, is how positive a child can be through this terrible ordeal. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Ethan.

I also used to work with Kim at VRI and, of course, I met Albert a few times at company functions, although he may not remember since it was long ago. They always impressed me as a wonderful couple. And I have profound admiration for the exceptional manner in which they are handling things now and the strength of character that I see -- and more than that, the enormous love they and many others are displaying. God bless you all. You are on my prayer list.

Great Lumpy Palooza for Ethan. I believe from what I seen, all was enjoying themselves and having a happy time for Ethan. The music show hit the spot. Ethan seem to be all rapped up in all the things to see and do and I think he really enjoyed the motorcycles. I wanted to offer him a ride, but didn't want to change the program you had. I know he will be riding at Ride for Kid's. I live in Dale City and we, MHRC, met at Manassas Honda for the ride to the Park. One of our members & his wife rode from Lake Anna from another event, just to be a part of this fundraiser. We only hope that by us being there and supporting Ethan that we have given him a better understanding of Life and that he has many friends to help him through this stage of his life.

Hi, this is Jules Brent Abbas from Quezon City, Philippines. Ethan is my second cousin from Albert side. Although we are miles away from you there but you're always on our thoughts and prayers. God will not leave you. We wish you here in the Philippine that someday you can visit your grandparent's country. We are proud of you and hope to see you as big grown boy. Belated Happy Birthday and also to your Dad. We wish you a good health and we know you can do it.
Hey Ethan, This is Tricia, your pharmacist at Home IV Care. I love your photos! You have a beautiful family! I hope things continue to go well for you and you will be in all of our prayers!! Love, Tricia :-)
My name is Brett Baker. I live in Northern Virginia. I am a former co-worker of Chaya's and a friend to Chaya and Randy. I have no children but have six nieces (including another on the way). My family suffered through a horrible scare when doctors said that my oldest brother's second daughter, Madison, likely had Cystic Fibrosis. We were devastated. Fortunately, it was a false alarm, caused by an inaccurate lab result. I realize that other children and their families and friends are forced to confront terrible diseases. Amazingly, it's the children themselves that are often the most strong, resilient, and brave. That's what gives us hope. I am glad to help in anyway I can. Go Ethan and Go Team Ethan.
I just wanted to say how proud I am of your family. In the midst of this most difficult time, you have all put so much time and energy into raising $18K for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. What an accomplishment! Ethan's toleration of all the treatments has been incredible, and I continue to be amazed by how completely his parents have adapted to their "new reality" as Kim would call it. With Team Ethan, you have created a community of people who love Ethan and will be with you all in the years to come. Much love, Lori Shoaf.
Ethan--
I hope you enjoy the little dog, that Piff employees gave to your grandma for you. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
Love--Linda & Terri
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, I hope ethans progress remains good.
your doing a wonderful thing with this website if more people are aware of pediatric brain tumors then less children will have to go through what your family has endured and my late nephew had to endure. lets spread the word and knock out pediatric brain tumors for good.

This message is a message of support! My daughter McKenzie was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age of 3.5, she is now almost 12. After unsuccessful chemotherapy treatments we had surgery and then radiation (she was 5.3 years of age). I can tell you that we have problems, such as learning disabilities, but I still have her with me. She is happy, loving and a gift from God. Fighting to save her was worth the battle.

Well i have to say that you are_________good
Hi everyone. I have been friends with Kim and Albert for over 10 years, and have had the honor to be a part of their lives, from working at MSC, to weddings, houses, and kids. I am ashamed to have taken so long to be able to share my thoughts with everyone, but I guess better late than never.
Finding out in May about Ethan's tumor was detrimental for me, as I got the call from my husband, in tears, while waiting for the police to come to witness our minor car accident. It was as if we got hit with a ton of bad news that moment. But as the year went on, we were encouraged and found strength in the Gumabays and Ethan. Their continued courage, positive attitude, and resilience is absolutely amazing. As the year comes to a close and we reflect on the past and look toward to the new, we look forward to Ethan's speedy recovery and the next Hattaras vacation with our favorite family.
Love, Karen, Dave, Thomas, and Ryan Base
Hello you guys. Carrie was good enough to let me know about the site.
I just wanted to pop in, say hello, and wish you all well. I'm currently stationed down here at Guantanamo Bay.
Take care.
Almost forgot -- Ethan, I doubt you'd remember me from long ago Vector Research days!

According to my 3 1/2 year old daughter, Brigitte, I am Ethan's future Mother-In-Law. Ethan probably doesn't know it, but Brigitte is head over heals in puppy love with Ethan. With no prompting from us, she discusses in detail how he will be a fireman, and she will be a cowgirl and a doctor when they grow-up and get "mayweed".
Over the past year, I experienced some tough times that were less tough for me to handle due to the Gumabay family's strength and courage. Just thinking about their strength and courage as parents faced with a tough situation has been my rock -- more than they will probably ever know.
Kim & Bert, Thanks!
Hang in there, and keep taking awesome care of Ethan.
Love always,
Heidi Lieu (and Alan & Brigitte, too!)

Greetings from the Bluegrass state. Kelley & I are best friends with Heidi, Alan, & Bridgie. We have been forwarded the updates for months and have had Ethan on our prayer list for some time.
Just wanted to tell you to keep the Faith, both of my parents were given 6 and 12 months to live when they were battling cancer. That was 14 and 4.5 years ago now. Stay the course, keep the Faith. It works.
If you have any tshirts left I would like to buy one. (XL) Thanks, Chuck & Kelley Coppinger
I'm not sure what to do here. I have an important question I need answered. My newphew is on his third course of his protocal. What his father wants to know is Luke is 16 with AML M-2, and in his third course of chemo it isn't called for gcsf. Could anyone out there let us know if their third course of chemo had gcsf in it. Also does anyone know what the BFM group used in their protocal for the third course of chemo. We need a answer real soon because Luke starts his third round real soon, and his father wants to know why his third course is not calling for gcsf. Thank you so much. Please e-mail us at monkey3@charter.net

Greetings From Richmond, VA! Hi Ethan,Kim & Bert, I really enjoyed meeting all you last fall and check your progress often. The prospect of your treatment possibly ending early is awesome and I will continue to pray for your progress. We are all working very hard here in central Virginia to have a great 1st RFK event on June 1, 2003. We hope to raise lots of money for the PBTFUS. Take care. Kathy Straughn

I worked with Kim's mother Beth at NCDE when this all started and I've been keeping updated online for the last 1 1/2 years from Florida. It's GREAT to see the recent pictures of Ethan looking so healthy. I'm glad that everything has turned out so well after all that you guys have been through. I hope everything continues to go well and you all live a very long and happy life. You guys deserve it after all you've been through....God Bless you all...Dee Gulisek
Howdy all!
Has been a while since I checked in. Always makes me remember how much I miss all my DC friends.
Chick-fil-a, huh? Too cool, good choice.

My daughter and I were invited to a birthday party for a child that my daughter attends daycare with. The family asked for donations in honor of Ethan for pediatric brain tumor research in lieu of birthday presents. I thought that this was a wonderful idea. I have a coworker that lost his wife 2 years ago this October to a brain tumor. She left him with a beautiful daughter who is now just turning 4 years old. I saw the struggle and pain first hand by knowing him and working alongside him. God bless you Ethan, you are a strong person & I hope to hear of nothing but wonderful progress in your recovery.
