23 July 2002:  Discharged

Good news! I just arrived home with Ethan in tow!

It turned out that the Thursday (July 11) culture was NOT positive for Kluyvera as originally suspected, so we could start counting our 14 days of antibiotics from Tuesday (July 9), since we had started Rocephin in the Doctor's office the week before. The Staph infection only required a 10-day treatment, so both ended today and we could be discharged. We're getting a new supply of Heparin that will be mixed with Vancomycin, so he'll be getting that as an extra precaution for the foreseeable future.

The only snag we ran into was that his hemoglobin was down today, so he needed a blood transfusion before we left. He was most excited to get his Grandpa's blood (via direct donation) and said, "Yep, that looks like Grandpa's blood in there". We pre-medicated him with Tylenol and Benadryl and didn't experience any of the earlier transfusion complications. It was either the meds or Grandpa's good blood.

Ethan had a great last day that was filled with helicopters, Nurse Goosey, rousing renditions of "Who Let the Dogs Out?" a visit from Nick, and a visit from his new favorite Technician (A.K.A. Fireman Kevin), who had a bag full of special fireman goodies. He was on the verge of a Benadryl coma when Fireman Kevin arrived, but was most pleased with the treasures when he woke up.

We hope to sail smoothly from now until we start the third cycle, probably next Friday, August 2nd. We've got a lot of resting to do between now and then, as do the Pediatric Oncology nurses who cared for him during his extended stay.

Warmest Regards, Kim, Bert, Ethan and
'wildly-walking' Kyra
