20 June 2002:  The Bean is Back!

Hi, everyone ~

Out little Bean is back to his normal, energetic, happy self! We've been in the office everyday receiving Rocephin (antibiotic) and Neupogen (to boost WBC) and that seems to have done the trick. Yesterday, his WBC/ANC were 300 and 0 respectively. Today they're 5,100 and 2,500!!

Ethan bounced off of all the walls for about an hour when he found out that he wasn't getting a shot today and made a point of telling all of the nurses "Dr. Horn says no more shots!!!" He can't wait to find Nurse Allison next week to tell her the news. She was the lucky one who gave him his shots all week, but was off today. We picked up some fruit (without peels) and a little baby cake on the way home. Ethan put his "3" candle in the cake and we sang "High Blood Counts for you" (to the tune of Happy Birthday, of course). He's so excited that he can go wherever he wants now... even Sears to see the lawnmowers!

He moved to a clear dressing over his central line (instead of gauze and tape), which is another positive step forward. He received his Vincristine and will resume VP-16 tomorrow at home. We'll continue VP-16 until next Thursday, then rest and recuperate.

Bert & I have our consultations lined up with the Radiation Oncologists from both Fairfax (June 24th) and Johns Hopkins (July 1) so will making the radiation decisions after that time. Depending on how quickly the whole process can turn around, we may get one more cycle of chemotherapy in before the radiation treatment.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback on beef jerky. It was one of my first "out of body" experiences and I'm glad my delirious state allowed me to share the moment with you.

Thank you again for all of your support!

Kim.
